People are always looking for new sources of energy to cover their growing needs in the areas of life they live; they are energy sources with far less impact on the environment than fossil fuels, which produce pollutants such as greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change is one of the main driving forces behind the growing demand for alternative energy technology.
Alternative energy (green energy), is a form of energy derived from natural sources such as wind, sun, rain, geothermal heat and waves, which is an alternative to the use of fossil fuels (such as coal, petroleum and diesel), and therefore reduces air pollution, maintains a clean environment and we must exploit natural resources using modern technology in order to achieve sustainable development.
Climate change, which the world is witnessing recently, has imposed an international trend towards relying on alternative sources of energy other than fossil fuels. Many governments have recently adopted strict targets for adopting clean energy technologies, and have placed a high priority on reducing carbon emissions significantly, in compliance with the recommendations raised by the Paris climate summit. The UAE is at the forefront of regional and global efforts to adopt clean energy technologies, as it enjoys a sunny climate throughout the year so that makes solar energy a clear option for the development of renewable energy systems in the country.
The World Future Energy Summit 2022, held in January, organized more than 200 sessions which focusing on Sustainable Development and climate change challenges, led by the Energy Expo, which hosted the largest and most important exhibitors in the renewable energy sector.
The relationship between alternative energy use and sustainable development
Sustainable development means protecting natural resources from human pressures, not overusing fertilizers and pesticides that pollute surface and groundwater, overexploiting forests and fisheries at unsustainable levels, as optimizing the global use of agricultural land and water resources, protecting animal and plant species from extinction, and limiting change in global climate stability.
Most of the Sustainable Development Goals focus on preserving the environment, making good use of existing resources, providing opportunities for future generations to benefit from them, activating modern technology and linking them to the goals of society.
Catalysts for the use of alternative energy in achieving sustainable development:
• Plays a key role in mitigating climate change and is environmentally friendly.
• Widely available all over the world
• Reduce dependence on energy imports sustainably
• One of the largest growing markets in the world
• Economical in many uses and with a great economic return
• A local source that does not move and fits with the reality of the development of rural and remote areas and their needs
Alternative energy contributes to a cleaner and healthier atmosphere, as all types of alternative energy are everywhere in the world, constantly renewable, automatically and never exhausted, and it is also less expensive than fossil fuel energy, where the cost is limited to the tools and equipment used, in addition to maintenance costs.
Governments are also starting to encourage their citizens to set up projects that rely entirely on alternative energy, because it is less expensive and does no harm to the environment.
